Favorite DC Ladies | Zatanna // Zatanna Zatara
There wasn’t much to being a super hero. It was all about finding yourself in a position where you’re the only one around who can save the day. Do you freak out and walk away? Or do you grit your teeth and walk into hell if that’s what it takes? If risking your life could save the lives of everyone else, what would you do?

"What do you know? The boy has talent."
And some final closure on the story. I love the characterization of Z and Zach’s relationship a whole lot. It’s a rare instance where an elder superheroine is training a male protege with her own legacy, or where a family is portrayed with a matriarchy in mind.
Not only that, but no one in the relationships finds this strange or worth pointing out. And that’s mostly because Zatanna is shown as a damn good magician who deserves to not only be considered in the big leagues with other super heroes, but to be respected (and even feared) by the supernatural element of the DCU. Her wit is as sharp as her heart is strong, and Zach, while playfully catty with her, is very much honored to have her as a mentor and cousin. He wants to earn her respect.
Plus, no one’s dialogue misses a beat. It’s fun and upbeat for everyone!
Except maybe the lesser devils and demons and pawns of demon gods that get turned into gold. But even then it’s still a maybe.
And now I’m missing them all over again!
"Don’t blink. Blink and you’re dead. Don’t turn your back. Don’t look away. And don’t blink." - The Doctor (Doctor Who, Series 3, Episode 11, Blink)
Zatanna knows what’s up.
(World’s Finest #276)
Ending up fiddling around with this much longer than I intended and ended up burning my lunch :(. I think the lighting works, but I’ve made a far too “pretty” John Constantine, too much James Dean and not enough Sting?
I dropped a multiply layer copy over the original sketch to boost the contrast, to see how it might hold up inked with some washes. Might redo it like that later
